I designed the Alex Basket crochet pattern because I’m in love with Home Decor, and truly enjoy finding ways to add punches of crochet into rooms wherever I can! So, when my friend Stevee mentioned that she needed a pot cover, I knew exactly what I wanted to do!

YARN
You can really use any yarn you like. Just make sure your hook size is a few sizes smaller than what is recommended on the yarn label. When I originally designed this pattern I used Bernat Maker Fashion for the Pot Cover, and then double stranded Bernat Handicrafter for the Basket. It worked out great for me, especially since the Linked Double Crochet Stitches help keep the yarn rigid.
When I remade the Pot Cover using the super bulky Lion Brand Fast-Track yarn, a super bulky size 6 yarn, I followed the instructions as written, and just double checked the size as I was working each round to make sure it would fit my plant pot properly. Check out my cutomizing tips below!
*** Fast-Track yarn has been discontinued. I would recommend using THIS YARN instead.

CUSTOMIZE
When I remade this basket pattern in Fast Track yarn, I wanted to cover a plastic pot that had a conical shape. It started off smaller at the bottom and gradually grew wider towards the top. The instructions as written have sides that are completely vertical.

When I was making the Pot Cover for this particular pot, and using Fast-Track yarn, I made sure to check my progress after every couple of rounds.
The same for once I started working up the side of the Pot Cover. When it started to fit too snug, I added an extra stitch or two at the beginning or end of the next round. I alternated to help keep the back seam straight.
I think it turned out pretty well, don’t you?

LINKED DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH
The Alex Basket crochet pattern uses the Linked Double Crochet stitch to create a beautifully dense fabric. Perfect for corralling small objects, and covering up unsightly plant pots. Please use the helpful tutorial for this stitch found HERE.
