Two days ago I woke up early in the morning and started chatting with my friend Briana Kepner of Briana K Designs about Faux Fur Yarn. Immediately I ran to my craft room, grabbed the Lion Brand Go For Faux I had laying around and whipped up this Faux Fur Hood crochet pattern before breakfast! Can you belive it?! Luckily for me it was a snow day so I snagged my daughter, bribed her with some Hallowe’en candy, and got these incredibly cute photos in no time flat. Want one for yourself?
The Yarn
No sooner had I made and photographed the sample then I had the Faux Fur Hood crochet pattern typed up and off to testers. When I say this pattern works up fast, I mean, it works up FAST!!!
The thing about Lion Brand Go For Faux, is that it’s a 100% polyester, super bulky #6 yarn. This stuff is incredibly soft and luxurious. It works up like a dream, and frogging is no problem! The only issue is that you can’t see your stitches. But really, once you get over the fact that you can’t see where your stitches are going, you will fall in love with this yarn too! When working with fur yarn, you have to really just rely on counting your stitches as you go, and feeling with your fingers where to place your next stitch. Make sure each row has the correct number of stitches before moving on to the next. I promise, NOBODY will see if you placed a stitch in the wrong spot. The fluff hides all!
A Thick & Quick option!
Still not convinced? I made another Hood using Lion Brand Yarn Thick & Quick. I altered the instructions ever so slightly. The starting chain is different (allows you to skip the sewing step you need in the Fur Hood). Also, since you can see the stitches easily I added a sc row along the bottom edge to clean it up. I wrote out the instsructions for both in this post.

Note on Gauge:
When working a gauge swatch with Faux Fur yarn, it is impossible to see the individual sts. You will have to keep track of your stitches and feel your way across. I promise, you will not be able to tell! I have included measurements throughout since measurements are far more accurate (and much less stressful!) than trying to count sts using fur yarn!

Gorgeous! I usually stay away from fluffy yarn for crochet as it’s so hard to see the stitches but I love your ‘don’t worry about it;’ attitude 🙂

I made this for the winter and I ABSOLUTELY love it! Your instructions were easy to follow after I figured out some things (I am a beginner), but once I got it down it was easy. I think this actually helped me become a little better since I had to feel for the yarn (as you mentioned, since we can’t see our stitches). Oh, and that crochet hook you recommended is a dream! I also voted for your website. Can’t wait to create more! Thanks!
