Charlottetown Cowl crochet pattern is Week 4 of the 12 Weeks Before Christmas Blog Hop 2018! I was so excited when Country Willow Designs invited me to take part in this event. What a great way to not only knock a few people off your gift list, but to also get to know some new Bloggers and Designers along the way!
I can hardly believe that we are already half-way through October. Where did the past ten and a half months go? Are you ready for 2019, or are you wishing time would slow down just a little bit? If you have been following me for awhile, you will know that we are neck-deep in house renovations. We have one room left to paint and the ENTIRE house will have been redone, top to bottom in only one year! You can follow along HERE. I really need to add in several more rooms, but we still have art work and accessories to add before I photograph them as complete.

12 Weeks of Christmas Blog Hop
The Yarn
Anyway! Back to the Hop. When I was at the CGOA Chainlink Conference back in July, I received a cake of It’s A Wrap Rainbow from our friends over at Red Heart Yarns. This super fine #1 weight yarn is a cotton acrylic blend that comes in a generous 623 yard cake. There are 8 beautiful colorways to choose from. I used this beautiful color called “Couture”. It transitions from beige, to grey, to teal, and then black. The four strands in this yarn are not plied (see photo below) so it is a little tricky to work with. However, this means the colors transition very gradually, one strand at a time. The benefit being that the transitions are extremely smooth and not easily seen.

While on the plane, flying home from the event, I started playing around with stitches and this cowl was quickly brought to life! Through the business of the Summer, this cowl was tested and then set aside, waiting for Fall as the perfect time to release. Well, here we are! What better time than this?! Ready for the pattern? Keep reading!

What a gorgeous pattern! I’ve already ordered the yarn and can’t wait to get started. I’m confused, though…..I want to make this in a size “S/M”, but the stitch count is confusing…….in “#1” for this size, you state, “Ch1, working around the inside of the Neck in each end Row, sc in first 3 sts, *sc in next 5, 2sc in next, repeat from * around, join. (156)”, but on #2, you state, ” Ch1, working in BLO, hdc around, join. (54, 117, 130, 156, 182, 211 now and throughout)”. I read this as the first row (after making the cuff of blo stitches) you should end up with 156 stitches, correct? I don’t see how this adds up, then in the next row, you end up with 54 stitches? Please help! I so want to make this, and I’ve always used written instructions with no charts, but I can’t make heads or tails of this. Thanks so much.
Sincerely Pam says
Hi Juli! The stitch count you will be following for All Sizes will be the fourth number in the brackets. In this case, the 156. (54, 117, 130, 156, 182, 211 now and throughout) The 54 is for the doll sizes. Hope that helps!
Thank you, Pam

Hello, I love this cowl. I was wondering what colors you used and how much of each color is needed.
Diane says
What type of yarn and how much? Love the colors what are they?
Sincerely Pam says
Hello, Diane! The sample was made using 1 cake of Red Heart Yarns It’s A Wrap Rainbow in color “Couture”.

I love this pattern but I’m missing something important: how to get started! I’m trying to make the Ladies L/1X but I don’t know how many stitches to chain. Or if I’m supposed to start off with a chain. I’m told to chain one, then single crochet in the next stitch (?) and continue the matter, somehow ending up with 192 stitches long. How many am I supposed to start with?
Sincerely Pam says
Hi Ellie!
Every size starts with the instructions for the Neck.
NECK
1: Ch6, sc in 2nd chain from hook and across. (5)
After you complete the Neck section you will move on to the individual sizes.
Hope that helps!
Pam

I get it now! I thought “neck” was one of the sizes. Derp.
Thanks for replying!
