When I was asked if I wanted to participate in the Preemie Crochet Challenge, I was so excited! I knew this would be a great opportunity to offer my popular Lansdowne Toque free crochet pattern in more yarn weights, specifically Sport #2, DK #3, and Worsted #4. This design is wonderful because it is easy to make, is gender neutral, and ticks the boxes for all the requirements for donations to a NICU.

PREEMIE CROCHET CHALLENGE – FAQ
This event is hosted by my friends at Sunflower Cottage Crochet. The event is simple. Each day a designer offers a limited time FREE pdf download of something they designed for a preemie baby. By downloading the pattern, you have then pledged to make and donate one of those items to a NICU of your choice. Please read this blog post over at Sunflower Cottage Crochet for a full list of rules, as well as a list of all the available designs.
Each download from Ravelry is a pledge to make at least one of that item to donate to a NICU or similar in November for Preemie Awareness Month. One pattern will be featured each day on the SunflowerCottageCrochet.com blog.
A few things to keep in mind:
- NICUs have very specific guidelines that must be met for donated gooods. Here is an example of that from the Preemie Project.
- Please check with your local NICU for the types of projects currently needed, and if any are being accepted at the moment.
- Very soft, acrylic yarns in Sport and DK weights are best. This is the time to break out the softest yarns you have. Anything scratchy or too fluffy are not for this type of project.
- Donations are only accepted from non-smoking homes.
Alright! You get the idea and now you’re ready to start!
