The Lansdowne Cowl is a little unique from other cowl designs. That is to say, this one begins smaller up at the neck, and then increases as you work towards the bottom, allowing for some awesome drape and more coverage around the chest, perfect for chilly Northern Ontario winters!

Firstly! This yarn…

Although Leither Co sent me this yarn to try, all opinions are 100% my own. OOOOOOOOO, boy! This yarn is beyond dreamy. 100% superwash merino in tonal shades of green and yellow. I used Leither’s DK base which gave me 231 yards each hank. For this design I used two full hanks. The only issue I had, was that this design worked up too fast and I didn’t want to be done working with this beautiful wool! Guess I’ll just need to get some more ?.

Pattern Instructions
Ch76, carefully join without twisting.
1: Ch1, hdc in each chain around, join. (76)
Starting in Round 2, and continuing throughout the rest of the Cowl, work every 2nd hdc in the 3rd loop only.
2-16: Ch1, hdc around, join. (76)
Increase Rounds
The next 18 Rounds will be increase Rounds. For the increase rounds, you will continue to work every 2nd hdc in the 3rd loop. Therefore, when working an increase, you will start with a regular hdc and then place a 3rd loop only hdc in the SAME stitch. The next 18 Rounds will be increase Rounds.
17: Ch1, hdc in first 37 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (78)
18: Ch1, hdc in first 38 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (80)
19: Ch1, hdc in first 39 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (82)
20: Ch1, hdc in first 40 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (84)
21: Ch1, hdc in first 41 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (86)
22: Ch1, hdc in first 42 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (88)
23: Ch1, hdc in first 43 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (90)
24: Ch1, hdc in first 44 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (92)
25: Ch1, hdc in first 45 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (94)
26: Ch1, hdc in first 46 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (96)
27: Ch1, hdc in first 47 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (98)
28: Ch1, hdc in first 48 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (100)
29: Ch1, hdc in first 49 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (102)
30: Ch1, hdc in first 50 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (104)
31: Ch1, hdc in first 51 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (106)
32: Ch1, hdc in first 52 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (108)
33: Ch1, hdc in first 53 sts, (3rd loop hdc, hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (110)
34: Ch1, hdc in first 54 sts, (hdc, 3rd loop hdc) in next 2, hdc in remaining, join. (112)
Increase Rounds End
After the increase Rounds, the Cowl will have a dip where the increases are. This will be the front of the Cowl and will help with the drape. Then, once Rounds 35-49 are complete, the dip will be less noticeable.
35-49: Ch1, hdc around (alternating hdc, and 3rd loop hdc), join. (112)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

I LOVE THIS DESIGN!!! Seriously, this is one of the prettiest cowls I’ve ever seen. I can’t explain how much your designs mean to me. Thank you! ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you so much, Teri! I truly appreciate your continued support!
I believe this is one of my favorite this year. Only a few WIP and I will be hooking this up. Thank you for sharing
That is so kind of you to say!
Hi Pam,
First, thank you for the beautiful pattern; however, I am confused by the following two sets of instructions between rows 2-16 and row 17:
“The next 18 Rounds will be increase Rounds where you will continue to work every 2nd hdc in the 3rd loop. When working an increase, you will start with a regular hdc and then place a 3rd loop only hdc in the SAME stitch.
The next 18 Rounds will be increase Rounds where you will continue to work every 2nd hdc in the 3rd loop. When working an increase, you will work both a regular hdc and a 3rd loop only hdc in the SAME stitch.”
To me it sounds like I will end up with the same set of stitches with either set of instructions; I must be missing something. Please help. Thank you.
Sue
Oh, goodness! That is a copy and paste error. You only need to follow that once! I will edit that second set of instructions out. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!
Help do not understand where the 3rd loop is
Hello! Behind the hdc stitch is a horizontal bar. That is what is often referred to as the 3rd loop. Crochet into that bar instead of the top two loops where you would normally would.
